Early Greek Philosophers

Major Representative Philosophers: Thales, Anaximander, Anaximenes, Parmenides, Heraclitus, Empedocles, Anaxagoras



Classification: Natural Philosophy, Pre-Socratics


Meaning: “They were mainly concerned with the natural world and its processes.”



Thales: believed that the source of all things was water.

Anaximander: believed that our world was only one of many worlds that evolve and dissolve in “the boundless.”
Anaximenes: believed that the source of all things was air/vapor.

Parmenides: everything that exists has always existed


Heraclitus: constant change is the most basic characteristic of nature


Empedocles: believed that the source of all nature was four “roots”—earth, air, fire, and water—that combine and separate to form new substances


Anaxagoras: nature is made of an infinite number of particles invisible to the eye—“seeds”—and there is something of everything in each seed
